PFC Alex Fan—Hero On Call

I enlisted in the California Army National Guard in 2006, the same year I graduated high school. I chose the Army National Guard because I wanted to do something different, something fun, but challenging at the same time.

I completed Basic Combat Training (BCT) and Advanced Individual Training (AIT) in Fort Knox, KY, as a Tanker. The training was difficult, but during the time I learned a lot about myself, as well as how to drive, load and fire the M1A1 Abrams Tank. I also met friends who I still keep in contact with, probably will for the rest of my life.

At the end of my training, I developed a sense of appreciation for my life, as well as a new positive attitude toward everything. I really feel like I matured and grew a lot during my training, and I also developed a hunger to learn how to be a better person.

I now utilize my GI Bill for college, furthering my education and pursuing Officer Candidate School. The Army National Guard has done nothing but good for me, and I hope it does for everyone else who gives it the chance it deserves.
