1LT Christine Leimbach—Hero On Call
The Army National Guard has been a positive influence in my life by encouraging me to develop and grow as a leader in this organization. I participated in the Junior Army ROTC program for four years in high school and I enlisted into the Hawaii Army National Guard as a preventive medicine specialist (91S), during my senior year.
At first I was a little unsure of what to expect, but I felt strongly about furthering my education and possibly receiving a commission through the ROTC program. After going to college for a semester using the tuition assistance, I was scheduled to go to basic and AIT. However, due to unfortunate circumstances, I never left and was medically discharged for a false allergy. I was really discouraged for awhile, but was more interested in pursuing my military career. The ROTC professors worked persistently at my contract for almost two years.
In May 2006, I graduated from the University of Hawaii with a bachelor's in Interdisciplinary Studies focusing on pre-med and military science. I also received my ROTC commission. Since then, I have been with a medical company as the treatment platoon leader and have also had the opportunity to go on many assignments and exercises.
After the deployment, I would like to attend the Inter-service Physician Assistant Program through the military at Ft. Sam Houston and get my master's degree. My overall experience in the Guard has been rewarding because I have had the opportunity to challenge myself as a leader and a member while going to college.
